clementinee: is the ee sound spelled wrong or just spelled twice?

Spelled twice. The ee at the end is a fair guess at what you hear, because English does normally write that sound with ee or ea. What it misses is that ine already says een in a large group of borrowed words: machine, marine, routine, tangerine. Every one of them is French, and clementine is French too.
